Questions to ask to help you identify health data/statistical sources:
- Is there a government agency or organization that would collect your data?
- Do you need very current or historical data?
- What type of data do you need (demographic, health, vital)?
- What level of data do you need (national, local)?
Global Health Data
idData aggregates information from multiple sources to provide a searchable database of global aid flows and projects. Browse by donor, country, or project.
from the Population Reference Bureau (PRB). Search for indicators and locations, and create custom reports.
DHS Program: Demographic & Health Surveys
from USAID, thhey collect, analyze, and disseminate accurate and prepresentative data on population, health, HIV, and nutrition in developing countries.
GHDx (Global Health Data Exchange)
Catalog of surveys, vital statistics, censuses, and other data from the University of Washington's Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation.
Global Burden of Disease (GBD)
Provides a tool to quantify health loss from hundreds of diseases, injuries, and risk factors, so that health systems can be improved and disparities can be eliminated.
Global Health Observatory (GHO) data
WHO's portal for providing access to data and analyses for monitoring global health.
Global Mortality map
Maps using WHO data to show which disease is most likely to kill you depending on where you live, by Public Radio International's Simran Khosla
Human Development Reports
from United Nations Development Programme
Social science data archive including datasets on health. Browse by topic or geography.
International Household Survey Network
Catalog of household surveys in countries around the world. This site does not contain the data in the surveys, but provides information to track the survey back to its source.
Millenium Development Goals Indicators
The official United Nations site with data, definitions, methodologies, and sources for more than 60 indicators to measure progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
World Bank: Health, Nutrition, and Population Dashboards
Provides access to health specific indicators for 200 countries.
World Bank Development Indicators
Provides access to a wide range of economic, environment, health, political, and social indicators in roughly 200 countries. Time series data is available for many indicators from 1960 onwards with convenient data extraction tools that allow data access in Microsoft Excel and other statistical packages.
